Louis Herbert Kilbert  was born December 2, 1937 in Chicago. He graduated from Steinmetz High School in 1954. He got his bachelor’s degree in 1957 from the University of Illinois in Zoology. He studied English literature in the graduate school at the same university. After leaving Champaign, Illinois, he got a job working in research tissue culture laboratory at Chicago Medical School When his boss moved to Sinai Hospital of Detroit in 1961, he went along to help set up the laboratory there. He was soon hired to run the laboratory at Wayne State University College of Medicine. Eventually, he got his master’s degree (1967) and Ph.D. (1969) in biochemistry. He went on to do research in diabetes at Sinai Hospital and was then hired to run the chemistry laboratory for the pathology department. In 1985 he became laboratory director of a small clinical lab in Madison Heights, Michigan. He also worked in the illustration department of a small auto company, Cars and Concepts, Brighton, Michigan, where he did computer graphics, established a video training production unit and worked on production and editing of various training manuals for the corporation. He started teaching part-time at Schoolcraft College in 1980. Later, he added a teaching position at Oakland Community College. He was hired full time to run the chemistry laboratory at the Highland Lakes Campus of OCC. He retired from his teaching duties at the age of 70. In 1973, Louis moved to his little farm in West Bloomfield. In 1974, he started building his greenhouses, there were approximately 5175 square feet of space under glass and plastic. The business supported him through some rough patches in his employment. In December 2005, the entire unit burned down and had to be razed to the ground. He was looking forward to that as his retirement business. Louis was the backbone of the Michigan Cactus and Succulent Society for almost 40 years. He was a volunteer gardener at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens of the University of Michigan where he and other member of the society did maintenance in the cactus house. A Memorial Luncheon will be held Saturday, November 9, 2013, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Bayside Sports Grille 142 E. Walled Lake Dr., Walled Lake, MI. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association. Envelopes available at the luncheon.
